Private Don Evans (Left), POW, Double Purple Heart survived WW2. Over his remaining long life, Don faithfully told his harrowing story and visited his fallen comrades' graves. Here Don is at my Great Uncle Pete's grave in the Margraten Cemetery in The Netherlands in 1984.
In the photo on the right are two loyal Dutch volunteers, Carla and Martin, at Uncle Pete's grave in 2023. Martin is the appointed Guardian of Pete's grave for his own lifetime. These amazing commitments to the memory of my Uncle inspired me to start flagging our soldiers graves here in the USA. Wherever I may wander and find myself on our important holidays, I know there is a cemetery nearby, where I can visit the graveside of neglected soldier graves and plant flags.
If their stories inspire you,
